Friday – March 2nd, Beach Fossils will headlining a great show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. They will be joined by:

//Mac DeMarco
This will be his first show in the US since signing to Captured Tracks. His upcoming EP Rock And Roll Night Club has been on constant rotation for months. Seeing him live will only fuel our obsession.

//Hoop Dreams
Their debut LP is almost done and due this summer. This Virginia-based band does not play very often in NY… Not an act to miss! Check out this video of HD playing at Cake Shop last CMJ below.

// DIVE
Best live show in town. DIVE is busy recording their first LP, due this summer and hitting the road with Frankie Rose in April.

Test Press is a new fixture on the Captured Tracks blog. It is basically a chance for the band to talk about a new release, before you hear it, as well as you can get to know some of the bands you may not be as familiar with. First up is Thieves Like Us, who have a new lineup, new album to share. Bleed Bleed Bleed is out March 20th. Here goes everything.

// Where is home?

I don’t really think we have ONE home. When we play shows (outside of France) there are often people shouting at us in French (none of us are French). Some people call us a Swedish band which is also inaccurate somehow as we only have one Swedish member. Sure, maybe the music sounds European and we live in Europe. But Martine and I are writing the lyrics and singing and we are both American. I don’t know how you label us. You cannot label us. This confuses people. I think it’s hard for people to think outside of labels. We’re a band of human beings. We’d like to move to Brazil one day. Oh, it’s so complicated.

// What music did you first fall in love with?

Probably sci-fi sounding music. Anything spacey. I would hate to start naming names.

// What music have you been into lately?

A lot of 1970s psychedelic music.

// What song do you wish you could have written?

Jangle Town by Nikki Sudden.

// What is your favorite music video?

The original Close To Me by the Cure is pretty good.

// Why do you guys love setting your music to films?

Those retro Euro teen glam fantasy soap operas police thrillers just seemed to fit us.

// Your new LP is titled Bleed Bleed Bleed. Why?

It rhymes with Greed Greed Greed but sounds cooler.

// What was your inspiration for the album cover?

The cover… mmm… Maybe it’s about selfishness. She’s staring at her image in the mirror.

// How is this album different from you previous three albums?

We recorded everything on this record in a shorter session. Only four months (except for Your Love Runs Still which we took from our ep we made March last year). Our first album Play Music was recorded over a period of three years. Again and Again was recorded over a period of two years. Those albums don’t have any unity of purpose or place or time. Bleed Bleed Bleed is a more concise representation of what we were feeling late summer and early Autumn last year.

// If you could sum up Bleed Bleed Bleed in one word (Bleed does not count)….

One word. How about, we probably watched too much Al Jazeera.

// What would you like someone to know before listening to the new album?

Don’t take anything (at all) too seriously / Reality is what you make it.

// What’s in the future for TLU?

We are recording a lot of cover songs right now. Hopefully we will get to tour the United States. We never did that.

MAC DEMARCO SIGNS TO CAPTURED TRACKS

Captured Tracks just got a little weird(er). Upon hearing demos from Makeout Videotape, we reached out to the man behind the music, Mac DeMarco. He quickly became all we could talk about / listen to. A few man-crushes may have developed… His music strikes a chord that we have never heard before and we could not be more excited to have his presence on our roster.

The first MDM single “Baby’s Wearin Blue Jeans” debuted on Pitchfork last week. More music videos to come out of the woodwork soon. An EP out in March. Worldwide captivation: 2012. What a great way to start off the new year.

Beach Fossils have been touring Mexico this past week and we miss them so. They are having a blast and only Tommy has been hit with food poisoning (their tour manager had to play drums one show).

Before leaving, Dustin slipped us this amazing mix that can only be described as “perfect.” We could expect nothing else. Enjoy!
