Can – She Brings The Rain
Sounds like a dark parisian backstreet at 3 am in the pouring rain after you’ve been in a bar you’ll never find again. You hail a taxi back to the hotel, lean your face against the window, and stare at the streetlights while you fall asleep.


Jimmy Smith – I’m getting sentimental over you
Could be the soundtrack to a Raymond Chandler pulp novel. I can picture Phillip Marlowe with some 1940′s Hollywood starlet and one of them saying to “well c’mon,darling,at least stay for a drink”


Getz/Gilberto – Corcovado
The Getz/Gilberto lp was my summer album last year, and I just love this song so much. Astrud Gilberto has such a dreamy voice.


Simply Red – Holding Back The Years
I have no idea how this song got stuck in my head but it did. I should hate Mick Hucknall and Simply Red, alltogether, but I don’t. He was also one of the people at that famous Sex Pistols show in 1976 at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester.


Everything But The Girl – Tender Blue
This song just paints a picture of night time life with a perfect guitar. Reminds me of my last year in New York City when I lived uptown near Central Park. “and still he lies awake at night…”


Harumi – Fire by The River
Some Japanese Psych stuff my best friend, Bobby, turned me on to. Love the dry drum sound. Kind of sounds like Rodriguez if you listen to it enough.


John Lennon – Hold On
Maybe it’s my favorite Lennon song, but I love this whole album……..”COOOOKIE!” John Lennon could have beaten up any of the rolling stones in a fist fight.


Chet Baker – The Thrill is Gone
Now, this is a sad song, but somehow it just makes me happy. Pretty good for an Okie…. “Chet Baker Sings” might be my favorite album of all time.


Cleaners From Venus – The Jangling Man
I’ve never been to Wivenhoe, but if I ever go I’d like to hang out with Martin Newell and play this song.


Air – Dirty Trip
Sexy Psychedelics. I remember reading an interview where AIR admitted that they actually turn themselves on with their music when they play live. It’s kind of sick, but fuck it…..why not

BEACHES

1) Road G in Southampton, NY (Because it’s locals only, the surfing is good, and you can drive on and have a party without having to be surrounded by rich people in ridiculous outfits.)
2) Long Beach near Sag harbor (Because it faces west, it has a beautiful sunset. In the summer you can park your car, sit on the roof and watch the fireworks in the harbor)
3) Rockaway Beach (Yes, it’s crowded, but it has a great consistent surf break and you can get to it by subway. The juxtaposition of a nice sandy beach with the city behind it feels very New York. When the water warms up for summer it stays that way until early October. Bring beer)
4) Montauk Point (Because it’s “The End”. The Easternmost tip of New York and Long Island. On a clear day you can see Block Island. Has big surf swells in the fall. It’s a great beach to walk endlessly. My favorite is to walk along the rocks just beneath the lighthouse in the winter and stare off at the ocean.
5) Napeague beach (Napeague is a long narrow stretch between Amagansett and montauk that is less than a mile wide with water on both sides. It feels very mysterious and the fog always rolls in very quickly without warning. This February a 60 ft whale washed up on the shore. I drove out to see it and was amazed at how big it really was. I spent the afternoon surrounded by a team of biologists.


CARS

First off, I do love old cars, but i’m a bit biased because I obviously like MINE the best.
1) 1959 American Rambler (The coolest car I’ve ever seen. Perfect lines, easy to drive, no power steering. Chatsworth green is the color to have. It is the perfect weekend beach cruiser. You can drive to Montauk point late in the day and have a picnic with the tailgate down, and watch the sunset. you could probably even throw down a blanket in the back and makeout too. The high beams are activated from a button on the floor.
2) 1975 dodge Dart ( A great example of a mid seventies muscle car. The slant six engine is easy to work on, so gear heads loved tinkering and adding after-market upgrades. Has “260AC” which basically means that you only cool breeze you’re going to get on a hot day is 60 miles per hour with both windows down. Looks identical to the car from Blue Velvet where Dennis Hopper is inhaling something from his gas mask.
3) 1986 Volvo 240 DL ( These cars will not die. They literally last forever. I’ve seen ones with 300,00 miles on them still running strong. They used to be the epitome of New England cool. This was the car du jour for the post college intellectuals, soccer and lacrosse moms, post Woodstock burnouts, UVM hopefulls, bearded ecologists, Bergman enthusiasts, and people with stickers that said “MV” or “ACK” which is short for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. Anyway, my mom had one and I loved it.
4) 1951 Dodge Coronet (I Met a guy Charlie in Sag Harbor who has one of these. He’s about sixty years old and spent some time in prison because he was growing marijuana on his property. Apparently it was his friend who’s responsible, but I didn’t know him then and I really don’t care. One day he was over the house and I was washing the car for him. It was 10:30 in the morning and i offered him some coffee or tea. He said no and then asked me, “Do you have any vodka?” My reply was, “yes, I do.”
5) 1969 VW Bus (This could be the best tour van in the world, or it could be the best vehicle for a cross country road trip with your best friends that you’ve been meaning to take but haven’t yet. The shape is iconic and the gas mileage is good. I’d open up the back doors throw in some surfboards and see if there were any wave around.)

PLACES IN EAST END

1) Black Cat Books on Shelter Island (The best book store I’ve ever been to. It’s not like the Strand in New York where they have every single book ever in print. It’s mostly art books and rare editions and that is just perfect. Recently I picked up a great book on Film Noir and another on shore whaling in the East End. The owners are great and are always up for a conversation. It’s kind of hard to get to because you have to take a ferry, but it’s worth the trip. Actually, the trip is half of the fun.
2) Innersleeve Records in Amagansett ( I love this place because it’s open year round, and a lot of businesses out here aren’t. The owner Craig is a really nice guy and will hunt down any record you ask him to. I don’t like to buy stuff from ebay because I think it’s really important to keep shops like this in business because I couldn’t imagine a day without record stores. He always has great jazz and punk records and they have a gallery in back. Recently I picked up a Chris Isaak cd there to listen to while driving.
3) The American Hotel in Sag Harbor ( This is my favorite place in the whole wide world to have a drink. This place is as authentic as it gets. it was originally built in 1846 when sag harbor was a whaling town. The bartenders, Vinnie and Paul, are great. The day after the hurricane was a complete blackout. I drove in to sag harbor and not a light could be seen anywhere. I passed the american hotel and noticed a flickering candle light inside. I parked the car and walked in. They were open and serving drinks in candlelight. It was magical.
4) Melet Mercantile in Montauk ( My friend Bob owns this amazingly curated space in an old auto garage about a mile out of town. He sells everything from books, vintage clothing, surfboards, vintage skateboards. Last summer he built a skate ramp in the back and covered it with about a hundred skateboards from the 60′s and 70′s. Has a great surfboard that Julian Schnabel painted one of his Blind Girl paintings on. He also sells records, which I help him with. We have some really great rare records that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
5) The beach, anywhere and anytime. There’s just something special about being by the water and hearing the waves crashing on the shore. Out here the beaches are endless. So many places to explore and get lost. In the words of Chet Baker, “Lets get lost.”

Here within this second fractured pop feast, are three remastered albums by The Cleaners – as well as a fourth one, containing not only the usual ‘rareities’ but also previously unreleased tracks and a few genuine treasures. The Cleaners had a back story, too. Included here are some of its fragments.Even today the chief question asked about the Cleaners from Venus is why they weren’t huge at the time. The answer to that is that Martin Newell believed that if they involved the music business in their work, the music might be spoiled. They therefore never bothered approaching a record company. For most of their existence, in fact, they didn’t even have a telephone. The Cleaners weren’t so much independent, as genuinely feral. You won’t have heard pop music like this for quite some time. Now listen.
