CT-69 SOFT METALS "The Cold World Melts" 12"

Here's the debut vinyl from the Portland duo Soft Metals. Formed in 2009, the band have been playing a ton of shows on the West Coast and garnering new fans with every stop. Their music is tight, romantic, electronic pop with influences from a variety of dance and post-punk sub-genres. First 500 on White Wax.

"Soft Metals’ the Cold World Melts is a stealth fighter with a thousand lethal weapons bristling under its sleek carbon wings, buzzsaw Orlando bassline and invincible italo riffage, swirling spiral of mind melting EMP synths and spectral diva propaganda. We surrender as its threatening dragon-like shadow spreads over our positions." -20 Jazz Funk Greats.

"If you’re a fan of Glass Candy or The Chromatics, or just anything Johnny Jewel or Italians Do It Better produce/release, then step right up… Soft Metals come heavy with the Italo rhythms and sultry vocals, but aren’t content to just keep things pulsating and dreamy. There’s a heavy Industrial and Darkwave influence that gives each song a film of grime and debauchery. If you’re into anything remotely dark, synthy and romantic, every single Soft Metals track thus far has been like aural cat nip. " -Mishka NYC.

Track Order:
1. Love Or Music
2. The Cold World Melts
3. Voices
4. Métaux Mous
5. Another Goodbye

CT-73 THE MONOCHROME SET "White Noise: Early Recordings" 12" EP

The Monochrome Set have a huge legacy in post-punk and indie rock history. "White Noise" represents the period before their 1st LP or 7", before Punk really took hold in the UK, in fact. These seven songs from '75-'77  have never appeared on vinyl before this release, and we're thrilled to get it out there.

Monochrome Set have recently reformed for a European tour.

Side One
1. Inside Your Heart
2. White Noise
3. We Are Zarbie
4. I Don't Know

Side Two
1. Flesh, Trash, Heat
2. Private Dick
3. It's More Than Just Love

CT-74 Veronica Falls "Beachy Head / Staying Here" 7"

The second Veronica Falls 7" finally gets a stateside release.

"Veronica Falls have written a pop song about everybody’s favourite place to top themselves and it is really really good. I mean, never has singing along to a graphical location where peepul choose to end it all seemed quite such top larks. This is indie of a very particular, very British, timeless and guileless sort, and it's also enough to remind a person why they plumped for plaid over pop in the first place. Terrific." -Drowned in Sound.

SING020: Voice Of The Puppets 7"

My friends at Sing Sing (link) have managed to reissue, in my opinion, one of the greatest DiY 7"s of all time. Anyone into any of the guitar based post-punk minded bands currently on our roster (Beach Fossils, Minks, etc.) will probably love it. The dearly missed caUSE co-MOTION! even covered the B-Side (I guess that's a "fun fact" ??).

From the label:
Hailing from Newcastle, Voice Of The Puppets – Russell McDonald (b), Steve 'Stesh' Millar (gtr/v), Chris Welton (k) and 'Stapps' (d) – began playing together in 1978 and one year later recorded these two tracks at Impulse Sound Studios, Wallsend. A self-produced and self-financed single surfaced in mid-1980, by which time Voice Of The Puppets were reduced to a trio following Chris Welton’s departure. The 250 copies pressed were all housed in a nice poster-sleeve featuring a cartoon history of the band drawn by Chris Welton. The two songs have their roots firmly in 1977 melodic Punk and are worth a spin with their infectious mix of Buzzcockian guitars and TVPs-like vocals. The combo had already split by 1981 with all members quitting music altogether. Steve Millar would sadly commit suicide in 2002. (45 Revolutions)

SFT003: Kebab We Live in a System 12" LP

My friend Nancy released a great reissue on her wonderful SoftSpot (link) reissue label. The 7" was a big want for myself and a Mike from Choking on Cufflinks. We still don't have it, but we have this reissue now. She reproduced the poster sleeve of the 7" in 12" format and painstakingly re-did the insert, which was in an envelope GLUED to the sleeves. She's crazy. It's been a great string of friends releasing reissues I want the originals of. You can check it out HERE (you will want it).

From the label:
"SoftSpot has delved back into the post-punk archives and unearthed another virtually unheard gem. Our first full-length LP features the recordings of Kebab, a short-lived quartet of punk-minded Belgian youths. Inspired by the Crass Records DIY mentality, the burgeoning UK art-punk scene, and their own boredom, Kebab combined anti-political punk diatribes with sharp guitars, plodding basslines, synth gurgles, and spastic electronic percussion. The result is an aggressively sparse take on post-punk that remains fresh and visceral sounding today.

Side A compiles all their known studio recordings, including the sought-after "Life It's a Joke" 7" from 1982. Side B features select tracks from their original demo tape, recorded in 1981 and limited to only 30 copies. All tracks have been remastered from the best available sources, and are presented on black vinyl in a full-size poster package containing lyric sheet, rare photos, and a vintage interview with the band." - Soft Spot

CT-72 The Soft Moon "Parallels" 7"

Here's a two sided burner from Luis Vasquez' Soft Moon. "Parallels" features sprawling landscapes of jaunting rhythms and pulsating basslines, like some sort of weird meld where krautrock meets Blade Runner. WHITE WAX! "The band is one of the long line of lush, dark pop bands that sprouted out of the tail end of 80's post-punk and shoegaze. The Soft Moon pick up the very best elements of those movements and craft a sound that’s not unlike anything out there." - Hypetrak

CT-71 Minks "Ophelia" 7"

Minks penchant for crafting dark pop songs with classic sensibilities sees no end in sight. "Ophelia" finds them in more of a pastoral, reflective mood than the previous single, drawing on Felt/Durutti Column guitar textures and dreamy, whispy vocal melodies. Two more tracks on the B-Side and that's all you get until the debut LP comes out in the Fall.

Hanoi Janes is back for his first release since the critically acclaimed "Year of Panic" LP. VR011: AUTOMELODI "Automelodi" LP

Captured Tracks is proud to offer the self-titled debut LP from Montreal's Automelodi out on Brooklyn's Wierd Records. Lead by vocalist and songwriter Xavier Paradis who has long garnered a cult underground following with his solo minimal synth project Arnaud Lazlaud active in Canada since the late 90's, the band was formed in 2006 and is a welcome new addition to the international wing of the Wierd Records community in Brooklyn. Like labelmates Led Er Est and Frank(just Frank) Automelodi combines guitars with synthesizers and drum machines, drawing from a mixed pallette of minimal electronic sounds. Highly unique to a North American band in 2010, the songs proudly embrace the infinitely rich ground of French pop musical history to create an undeniably idiosyncratic, and cerebrally sophisticated truly 'complete album' of feverishly-pleasureseeking, yet elegant and cooly restrained music that will be a refreshingly welcome shot of cold wave energy into the ears of both contemporary rock and electronic music fans worldwide!

VR010: FRANK (JUST FRANK) "The Brutal Wave" LP

Captured Tracks is proud to offer the debut album from Frank(just Frank) from Paris, France entitled 'The Brutal Wave' out on Brooklyn's Wierd Records. 'The Brutal Wave' draws from many rich traditions of guitardriven wave, minimal synth, and new indie music from Brooklyn respectively - layering lush washes of atmospheric anglophilic guitars that invoke early REM, Smiths, or the Cocteau Twins above a minimal synth and drum machine fueled backdrop with the caustic intensity of A Place to Bury Strangers, the wavey sounds of Crystal Stilts or The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and the sweeping melancholia of The Depreciation Guild. Equally of disparate origins are the band members themselves: Chris was born in New Jersey and grew up with half-Indian Kirti in Nice in the South of France, although both were schooled in London. Despite such varied influences and backgrounds, Frank Just Frank is based in France, and indeed proudly embrace and present a newly moderized version of the highly-overlooked tradition of early 80’s moody French pop known at the time as the Cold Wave, or ‘La Vague Froide’.

JAMESES "Self-Titled" 7"

Captured Tracks is in love with The Jameses, we were lucky enough to secure copies of their self-released debut 7". It's bright, slightly psychedelic pop that has it's own feel, a lot of things come to mind, but check their MySpace to draw your own comparisons (http://myspace.com/3headedlion) ("To The Shores of Lake Placid" maybe?).

"Lo and behold, it, like everywhere else, has plenty of varied strains of underground digging up towards the sun simultaneously and if the ones who've shown up with their bathing suits and sun screen are a sign, then let's jump the gun and call this the summer of Florida, even though their seasonal variations are ambiguous at best. So far, we've gone out on a limb for Jacuzzi Boys and Lil Daggers and Matrix Infinity, and now we'd like to throw another branch out for the breezy garage pop of The Jameses.

If this is the sound of West Palm Beach, I'm ready to retire." -Impose

CT-68 WILD NOTHING "Gemini" LP/CD/CS

Wild Nothing, is the solo-project of Jack Tatum whose music is inspired by a longtime love affair with nostalgia. His debut full length album, Gemini, set to come out on Captured Tracks this spring, is full of dreamy, carefree synth-pop songs that linger with an inexplicable sense of regret.

Prior to embarking on this recent solo-project Tatum sang and played guitar with the Abe Vigodaish tropical punk band Facepaint and the singer/songwriter project Jack and The Whale. In the summer of 2009 The Virginia tech-college student decided to embark on his first creative-solo project playing bass, guitar, synthesizer and drums while recording in his home-studio. He soon emerged with a unique brand of dreamy pop-songs influenced by bands like, My Bloody Valentine, Shop Assistants, Go-Betweens and Cocteau Twins. In 2009 he delivered a memorable cover of the Kate Bush song Cloudbusting, making it clear that Wild Nothing transcended the lo-fi pop-mold. On his debut album, Gemini, Tatumʼs frail vocals come warped in an oozing neon haze. Carefully orchestrated synth-pop arrangements, trebly guitar riffs and tattered drum machines blend together to create an intriguing, texturally rich glo-pop album that could come only from the young at heart.

CT-67 BEACH FOSSILS "Beach Fossils" LP/CD/CS

The story of Beach Fossils starts with frontman Dustin Payseur writing and recording songs for their debut self-titled LP out of his tiny Brooklyn apartment in the Fall of 2009. His recent move from North Carolina that year had left him with a sense of longing to reconnect with his past and the lush open landscape he left behind. During that year Dustin experimented with innovative methods of self-recording (using a Tascam four-track and Logic Pro) and composing. He drew his inspiration from improvisational jazz, classical and shoegaze artists, such as Anthony Braxton, pre-Stereolab project McCarthy and Giuseppe Tartini. Playing all his own instruments (keyboard, drums, bass, guitar), he soon emerged with a shimmering array of sun drenched pop songs.

Dustin eventually linked creative forces with John Pena (bass), Sennott Burke (guitar) and Cole Smith (drums) who joined the band and helped collaborate on the songs Wide Awake and Gathering. The full bandʼs immediate chemistry and unforgettable stage presence radiate with a wild, youthful-sincerity.

Beach Fossils offers warm and inviting melodies that evoke the haunted sounds of another era: straightforward guitar riffs, a kaleidoscope of psychedelic rhythms, and distant, faded vocals all come together to make the perfect soundtrack to an endless summer afternoon.

After hearing their demo last in the spring of 2009, Mike Sniper signed Beach Fossils to Captured Tracks. Since joining the label ʻs roster, Beach Fossils have played CMJ,SXSW, toured the U.S. and are planning a European summer tour. Their debut LP, will be available, this May in stores and online.

CT-62 TIM COHEN "Laugh Tracks" LP

As the frontman for the already prolific Fresh & Onlys, it seems impossible that there's yet even more songs coming from the well of Mr. Cohen. More surprising is that they maintain a high standard of quality. "The Two Sides of Tim Cohen" LP came and went in the blink of an eye. Recorded after his stint in Black Fiction and before his current set-up in the Fresh & Onlys, "Two Sides.." was a fresh dose of pure outsider pop with drum machines and keyboards. For a follow up, "Laugh Tracks" finds Tim in a more fleshed out full-bodied approach, complete with horn arrangements. These are personal songs from a highly gifted songwriter and we're happy to make them available. Tim does his own art for all of his solo material, you can find more on: http://www.timcohen.com

CT-61 SOFT HEALER "Gentle One" 7"

Soft Healer began in 2008 in an attempt by Marie Butcher and Will Slack to cover Suicide songs on pedal steel and clarinet.  The duo swiftly failed at this and decided instead to play music with a more forgiving set-up.  They began playing bass and guitar and got a drum machine; they quickly found that all attempts to reconcile the stark, percussive landscape of Colossal Youth with a Staple Singers group hug yielded something that was distinctly neither, but went with it anyway.

After their first show, Soft Healer became a trio with Sara Berger joining on sax and organ.  A few shows later they were an even four with Nick Decarmine playing drums.  At this point the band collectively owned all of the first nine Funkadelic albums.

Under and Under, is Blank Dogs' latest and most massive release to date - a double-album housing twenty brand new songs (15 on the CD) that show off his pop chops to a greater extent than any of his previous releases. Also, for the first time, Blank Dogs has incorporated the assistance of outside musicians to lend a hand. Various artists from the Brooklyn music scene - members of the Crystal Stilts and Vivian Girls, among others - contribute this time around, though the sound remains as dusted and strange as anything Blank Dogs has done before.

CT-53 GIRLS NAMES "Don't Let Me In" 12" EP

"Formed in January 2009 with their first gig booked before even playing together,  Belfast 's Girls Names unabashedly hark back to the early/mid eighties shadow world of Beat Happening, Black Tambourine, Felt, C86 and the Sound of Young Scotland. In their short existence they have quickly honed their craft in creating their own self-styled “disposable noise pop”, masking subdued bittersweet vocals and melodic hooks with reverb drenched guitars and Mary Chain primal drums. Having sold out of their debut home taped demos on Cass/Flick (Belfast) last summer and after a string of support slots with the likes of Sic Alps, Wavves, Times New Viking, Lovvers and Gary War, Girls Names are set for their first release 'proper', with a 12" EP on Brooklyn’s much talked about Captured Tracks label and a full UK tour with label buddies, La La Vasquez in the spring."

CT-51 DIGNAN PORCH "Tendrils" LP/CD

"Slightly tussled London quartet Dignan Porch have created an unassuming, but addictive rainy-day bedroom-pop gem with Tendrils, their full-length debut. The hushed, layered, hazy and downcast psychedelia might remind you of various early New Zealand pop crews of the Flying Nun sort (slowed to 1/4 speed). Or you could go back to the UK and talk about Sarah Records, though there’s often something weirder woven into the compositions. The 13 songs are brief — the longest is under three minutes, a handful shorter than two — but they work together as a larger patchwork. " - from Stereogum

CT-45 HANOI JANES "Year of Panic" LP/CD

"With the obvious homage the name implies, you’d expect Hanoi Janes to be a group of riot grrrl angnsty types, displaced in time by about 20 odd years. Having taken on the nickname given to Jane Fonda in the 70s because of her anti-war stance on Vietnam, these girls would be all bent up about, well you know, stuff. You’d expect that, but you’d be wrong. It is in fact primarily the work of one guy from Sachen, Germany – Oliver Scharf. But then Hanoi Janes’ album, ‘Year of Panic’, is able to inspire all kinds of misconceptions. Name of the band aside, would you expect a German guy (who’s a bit handy with an eight-track) to produce a series of beautifully lo-fi, sub two-minute, surf-pop tracks, full of buzzing guitar and bubblegum spirit. Maybe – maybe not. But that’s just what Scharf has done. The sound is distinctly garage, reminiscent of a 70s surf sound, and like The 5. 6. 7. 8’s, Hanoi Janes are able to launch into the genre with the luxury of being removed from the scene itself. Tracks like opener, ‘The Boys Are Out’ and ‘Beach Kids’ are unashamedly infectious, utilising catchy hooks, hand claps and the odd ‘Ooo ooo ooo’ to great effect. The production is fuzzy, but that only adds to the overall charm of the album. Because charming is what it is, as Hanoi Janes have packed ‘Year of Panic’ with some real gems. ‘Summer of Panic’ offers something tinted with psychedelic sounds; ‘Our Lives’ could have been an early track by The Strokes had they been influenced by the Californian sun rather than the New York shadows; ‘Good Bone’ is a track which can only be performed if there are several oversized surf-boards nearby. ‘Year of Panic’ is lo-fi, scuzzy garage surf-pop at its finest and it deserves to be the sound-track of your summer" -BOWLEGS, UK

CT-48 MINKS "Funeral Song" 7"

"As generous a kiss-off to Summer as we could hope for, MINKS' “Funeral Song” came virtually out of nowhere. Like if Robert Smith gave birth to a baby, and the baby was actually a cassette of Cure demos that had a lot more staying power than actual Cure demos. Ostensibly we could say this song is reactionary: abandoning the good vibes and surf jams of the warm months of ‘09 in favor of something colder. Rigid bass lines over icy, high-register synth whine. But the song has a lot more heart than that, so long summer time repeated endlessly until it not only makes sense, but makes frigid cold seem welcoming." - Fader

041 WETDOG - Frauhaus! LP

"The UK-based band, composed of Billy Easter on bass, Sarah Datblygu on drums and Rivka Gillieron on vocals and guitar, excel in creating atmospheric, erratic sounds with a jaunty disregard for anything mundane . . . Wetdog count a variety of top notch influences on Frauhaus!, citing Micachu, Syd Barrett and Euros Childs, with legendary graphic novel illustrator Robert Crumb and 1979 cult British horror flick ‘The Wicker Man’ also flagged, the latter’s flashing play between gentle pastoral and darker reveals most evident on the twittering bird song and thick, stop-start chords of ‘Trees Fall’. Though each of the album’s fourteen songs has a disjointed style and rhythm of its own, they bob and weave into each other with a connecting sense of joyful weirdness, darkly irreverent rather than pretentious; menacing at times, but in a deliriously fun way. Fabulously uncompromising, it’s futile to attempt any generic labelling here; Wetdog delight in merging styles, setting keyboard and guitar melodies clashing gloriously against stubborn basslines, beginning songs in one manner only to change all the rules come the chorus. These helter-skelter tactics mean Frauhaus! has a kind of anarchic spontaneity to it, where the ground could shift at any moment. It’s an exciting atmosphere that evokes the tumultuous ethos of The Slits, made even more potent by the darker, Halloween-style motifs of The Need, that cover the corners of their songs with spiderwebs and vampire fangs."

I found Oliver through his Zac Efron-channeling solo project Male Models,  but soon learnt it was just "a one afternoon project" - and that his other moniker Hanoi Janes will be used for all future musical forays, along with a couple of pals banging some drums from time to time." -Rose Quartz

037: DIGNAN PORCH "On A Ride" 7"

"A brief burst of sweetly melancholic garage pop reminding me of some mid-90's MTV vibe back when it had weird lo-fi videos in the AM that would kind of stick in your brain, or perhaps it was just me being easily susceptible at the time. Anyway, this new London band reminds me fondly of many things from the era, as well as having something of a more psychedelic Skygreen Leopards air to it. Definitely one to keep an eye out for." - Don't Die Wandering

VR-009: LED ER EST "Dust On Common" LP

"Wierd is proud to present the debut LP by Led Er Est Dust on Common. This the band's first full-length release shows the three piece clearly breaking out of the Wierd minimal synth underground they have been a vitally integral part of since its inception in Brooklyn to create an undeniably contemporary set of highly crafted and restrained, icily psychedelic pop songs. Synthesizing countless disparate musical influences from first wave British industrial music to house, disco, and the largely unknown cold wave (aka 'La Vague Froide') tradition in Northern Europe, the 9 killer trax on 'Dust' fly by, straight out of the frozen hot, lonely cold plains of vocalist Samuel Kklovenhoof's native central Texas. After digesting a few songs of this rich dust, the listener can do no other than lie down in the wild wierd Laredo bunker to revel in the refreshingly brisk blast of hedonistic analogue pleasure dancing through the airwaves in the sky above...Ladies and gentlemen, presenting Led Er Est!" -Wierd Records

VR-008: XENO & OAKLANDER "Sentinelle" LP

"The long-awaited full-length debut album from Xeno & Oaklander is now available! Functioning as the absolute core of the electronic wing of the Wierd world since their beginnings in 2004, Miss Liz Wendelbo and Sean McBride here present a carefully composed, restrained and complex form of moody electronic pop music that is simultaneously romantically melancholic and affirmatively aggressive. Recorded entirely live in the studio with exclusively analogue instruments, Sentinelle situates itself as a series of highly crafted cinematic vignettes which takes as its vantage point a fictitious era in a long-passed distant age: a time of wandering desert travelers, forgotten underwater cities, and exquisitely sculptural objects; of arid land, sea-farers and ferrymen, blinding light and lonely rooms, precious metals and poisonous corrosion. Themes of paranoia and disaffection associated with the transformation felt during the industrial revolution(a stand-in for our contemporary digital malaise), as well as odes to the many gifts of its legacy - motion pictures, cameras, synthesizers, and voltage control, are traversed throughout the epic journey of this minimal electronic masterpiece, allowing the listener to gaze out of the frozen cold window onto the many radical paradigm shifts of the twentieth century, and is a true sonic portrait of this eminently fragile era in transition." -Wierd Records

Led Er Est add an organic and warm element to synth/drum machine-based music, all with good songwriting at it's heart. The a-side is manic and the b-side melodic. These two songs are not on their current LP, and they're two of their best.

030: GERMAN MEASLES - Wild 12" Maxi-EP / Mini-LP

Out of control, drugged up, fucked up madness from Brooklyn's premiere party freaks. Almost the polar opposite of this spring's cassette release - these songs are confident, insane and beautifully recorded by Gary Olson. Some sort of funky mix of The Soup Dragons, Black Randy, Protex and The Fall had they recorded for Bhudda. All the subtlety of Sonny Bono trying to barge his way into a restaurant while wearing a fur vest. Features 2/4ths of the legendary Cause Co-Motion!

028: SPECTRALS - S/T 7"

A young British man named L. single handedly produced this dreamy, Sonic Flower Groovy fuzz-pop stomper, although it sounds like it could have been recorded at Gold Star in 1965 for release on Creation in 1985. Two tracks, one million hooks. We're really proud to be putting this out in anticipation of a 2010 Captured Tracks LP.
