THE CLEANERS FROM VENUS VINYL BOX SET
    VOL. 2
    CT-175-178

This is Volume Two of the enthusiastically-received Captured Tracks repackaging of The Cleaners from Venus. This part of the collection covers a 3-year period between 1983 and 1985 for the Brit Lo-fi combo, now being described as 'D.I.Y Beatles.' While the rest of the 1980s rock world had immersed itself in epic and often empty gestures, the Cleaners concentrated on neat little lo-fi pop songs of a quality and standard which, as one critic later noted: “Pop music elsewhere had pretty much forgotten.” By now, one of the band's founder members, Lawrence Elliott had left the band. Its chief songwriter, Martin Newell, like the captain of a strange pirate ship took charge, and Cleaners from Venus went sailing...

Here within this second fractured pop feast, are three remastered albums by The Cleaners – as well as a fourth one, containing not only the usual 'rareities' but also previously unreleased tracks and a few genuine treasures. The Cleaners had a back story, too. Included here are some of its fragments.Even today the chief question asked about the Cleaners from Venus is why they weren't huge at the time. The answer to that is that Martin Newell believed that if they involved the music business in their work, the music might be spoiled. They therefore never bothered approaching a record company. For most of their existence, in fact, they didn't even have a telephone. The Cleaners weren't so much independent, as genuinely feral. You won't have heard pop music like this for quite some time. Now listen.

CT-175 // THE CLEANERS FROM VENUS ‘IN THE GOLDEN AUTUMN’ LP

    THE CLEANERS FROM VENUS
    'In the Golden Autumn' LP
    CT-175

Available for the first time on vinyl, 'In the Golden Autumn' is a
product of founding member Martin Newell and fellow kitchen porter,
Martin Chapman. This is the first record in the "Vol.2" batch of
formerly cassette-only reissues that have been remastered for a long
overdue vinyl release. This legendary lo-fi band, which continues to
be highly influential as evident by the critical claim from the first
three record from the band, released in spring of 2011.

Martin Newell, who formed the legendary lo-fi band Cleaners From Venus
in the small town of Wivenhow, England began work on 'In the Golden
Autumn' in the warm early spring of 1983. One of Newell's chief
problems at this time, apart from constant money shortages, was
finding musical collaborators who shared his own skewed pop vision.
The absolute opposite of a musical perfectionist, the founder Cleaner
believed that great pop was to be had by doing things quickly, in
slapdash fashion and by 'fumbling around in the dark in search of
happy accidents.' Liner notes explaining the time and place are
written by Newell himself, giving some insight into each song.

    THE CLEANERS FROM VENUS
    'A Dawn Chorus' LP
    CT-176

This is a collection of previously unreleased songs from founding
member of the legendary lo-fi band The Cleaners From Venus, Martin
Newell, before, during and after his time with the band (1967-1985).
Newell collected these songs from the forgotten nooks and crannies of
his colorful musical background. This record is the first release from
the band containing new songs from the time, since they disbanded in
1986. Liner notes unveil a personal glimpse into each song, written by
    Newell himself.

As finishing piece to the "Vol.2" batch of formerly cassette-only
releases from The Cleaners From Venus, the band's cult continues to
grow as a new generation discovers this influential band. This release
comes off of critical claim from the first three records from the
band, "Vol. 1," released in spring of 2011.

  • Dark Entires is honored to reissue the long out of print debut album “Elevator to Eden” by Lives of Angels. Lives of Angels was the brainchild of Gerald O’Connell from London, England. In 1974 he worked at CBS studios mastering recordings from tape to disc. By 1977 he joined his first band Mystery Plane, led by school mate Mark Harvey and later joined by his soon-to-be wife Catherine. Gerald branched off in 1980 forming Lives of Angels as an outlet for his own compositions. He recorded, produced and played all of the instruments on “Elevator to Eden” between 1981 and 1983, using a primitive set up of drum machines, one keyboard, guitar and a tape echo. Influenced by the Krautrock sounds of Neu! and Amon Duul II as well as US psychedelic rock, Lives of Angles crafted their own unique post-punk sound. “Elevator to Eden” was originally released in 1983 on cassette by Color Tape Records, the label started by Gary Ramon of Modern Art. Then in 1986 Fire Records remixed and re-released the album on vinyl but the band was not happy with the mixes. This reissue features the original 4-track cassette mixes of “Elevator To Eden” on vinyl for the first time ever. The LP includes 9 songs featured on the original Color Tapes release. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley directly from the original master tapes. Each LP comes with unreleased photos, original artwork and a lyrics for all songs.

    Yo La Tengo
'I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One' LP
    CT-Picks / Matador (OLE-222)

"Yo La Tengo began life as one among hundreds of Velvet Underground-inspired bands, banging out dark, skittish tunes that displayed YLT guitarist/vocalist Ira Kaplan's affection for Uncle Lou as well as Yo La Tengo's commitment to creating a gently subversive groove. Over the years, the band, which also features Kaplan's wife Georgia Hubley on drums and vocals, has gone through more identity changes than David Bowie, from acoustic folk-rock to wailing, Sonic Youth-like guitarchitecture. On this album, the band consolidates their sound as they expand it, incorporating bossa nova, electronica, and '60s pop into a gorgeous shimmering whole that is something more than the sum of its parts. The laconic-but-expressive vocals of Kaplan and Hubley provide the songs with just the right combination of detachment and naïvete, and the trio (which also includes bassist James McNew) sounds like one person with six arms, three brains and one big heart. And don't worry; 'We're An American Band' isn't the old Grand Funk Railroad song."

// YO LA TENGO ‘ELECTR-O-PURA’ LP

    Yo La Tengo
    'Electr-o-pura' LP
    CT-Picks / Matador (OLE-132)

"Around the time Electr-o-pura came out in 1995, American music critics were starting to recognize Yo La Tengo as a standout band. The Hoboken, New Jersey, trio lived up to that newfound billing on this release, fully realizing the fruits of what they had started on Painful. It was there that Yo La stopped thinking of themselves as a three-piece band with guitar, bass, drums, and the occasional keyboards, instead opening up walls of sound, patterns upon patterns over which Ira Kaplan's guitar soars, dives, and spirals. It's amazing that a great pop song ('Tom Courtenay'); a lopey, sleepy ballad ('Pablo and Andrea'); a droney, open-ended jam ('Blue Line Swinger', with which the band closed its shows for years); and a couple of out-and-out freak-outs could all coexist so naturally. Though there are bands that have mastered each one of those aspects better than Yo La had at this point, not one could combine them into one work as sublime as Electr-o-pura." --Randy Silver, Amazon.com

    Xeno & Oaklander
    'Vigils' LP
    CT-Picks / WIERD RECORDS (VR019)

Wierd Records is proud to announce the release of a vinyl edition of Xeno & Oaklander's Vigils EP, originally self-released by the band as a limited edition CDR in 2006, here remastered with a previously unavailable bonus track. Merging the cold, cinematic aesthetics of artist Liz Wendelbo with the architectural exactitude of Sean McBride (a.k.a. Martial Canterel), Xeno & Oaklander have been the sharpest spearheads of twenty-first-century minimal synth since their formation in 2004. Using analogue synthesizers and instruments exclusively, the duo record all of their songs live in the studio, a challenge to the common practice of cut and paste recording where immediacy is often sacrificed in favor of a far-removed drag and drop electronic pop.

Recorded in one continuous take on October 1st, 2006, and played to loving death by all of the DJs at the weekly Wierd party for the past four years, Vigils has long been a cornerstone and inspiration to a new young generation of electronic bands in the Brooklyn synth scene and beyond. Uptempo, echo-laden synthesizers and drum machines provide a spacious backdrop for Miss Liz's ephemeral vocal presence. Their melodic, mournful oeuvre is an invocation of a lost future that was abandoned years ago in favor of something less human. These eight tracks are both fragile and psychedelic, suggesting an electronic equivalent of the British shoegaze bands while maintaining the wildly aggressive, stripped-down, raw, and unmediated spirit of punk and the seminal industrial noise groups that informed the ideals of the original wave of European minimal electronic bands.

  • Eighteen years after they called it quits as a working band, 2013 finds the original members of Medicine reunited and proudly offering a newly recorded LP on Captured Tracks. “To The Happy Few” is the sound of a highly inspired group reclaiming its creative legacy, thoroughly immersed in the practice of mixing harsh noise with obsessive melodic detail and heavily groovy rocking. Returning is the core trio of lead singer/ chanteuse Beth Thompson, guitarist / vocalist Brad Laner, and drummer Jim Goodall, the same team which created the still vital, influential and controversial LPs “Shot Forth Self Living” (1992) , “The Buried Life” (1993) and “Her Highness” (1995) as well as a stand-out appearance in the 1994 film “The Crow”.

As it happens, it’s really all the fault of Captured Tracks. In 2012 C/T pulled off the seemingly impossible and secured the rights to reissue the aforementioned two original Medicine LPs in loving and expanded fashion. This was a rather emotional moment for the original band members. So much so that upon meeting up at Brad’s home studio in May 2012 for the first time since 1995 in order to divide up the vinyl goodies and ultra-limited box sets, the trio laid down the basic track for what became the final song on the new LP. Emboldened by the natural ease with which they slipped back into Medicine mode, the trio spent the remainder of the year leisurely recording the new LP and enjoying each other’s company far removed from the stress and turmoil of their original early 90′s run. The resulting LP is not your parent’s Shoegaze record. The sonic palette and the hands, feet and mouths that utilize it may be the same, but the end result more subtly reflects the amassed life experiences and refined aesthetics of three mature artists only just now approaching the peak of their powers..
