The Swamps is the newest release from American swoon lords Widowspeak and is now streaming for free at SPIN. It arrives as a bridge between the duo’s sophomore album, Almanac, and an as yet untitled third studio record. Here the band’s characteristic sonic landscapes, haunting harmonies, and layers of delicate guitar-work usher in a new chapter in their dark and dreamy catalog. Inspired by the light-choked wetlands of its title, The Swamps brims with songs about fears of stagnation and the pitfalls of nostalgia, but never relinquishes Widowspeak’s melodic optimism.
“‘True Believer’ is the penultimate song to appear on the EP’s tracklisting, and it finds Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas pushing their sound even further in a warm, lush direction, with a sliding melody that sounds almost tropical in construct.” – Pitchfork
“A Brooklyn shoegaze outfit, you say? Ten a-penny, surely, but then Widowspeak have also had that something extra to entice us. 2011’s ‘Almanac’ album was a wonderful step forward, the sound of a band coming to grips with their own potential… [True Believer is] country tinged, Molly Hamilton seems lost in a fog, attempting to trace her way to that other, dream America.” – Clash Music
“… the duo take their dreamy palettes to the hot and humid Louisiana wetlands on their latest track “Calico”. Off their forthcoming EP, The Swamps, the cut’s shiny, twang-filled melodies are swathed in a thick and muggy fuzz, eventually taking on a whole new hazy luster.” – Consequence Of Sound
